Merops punctum

punctuation

Merops punctum automatically standardizes the use and formatting of punctuation and spacing in documents.

Varied Thrushes, the name of which conveys a sense of the variability of use of punctuation

Punctuation formatting

Merops punctum ensures punctuation signs are not incorrectly shown in bold or italic, a regular authoring error. For example, species names should have a Roman parentheses:

(Zoothera naevia)    should be     (Zoothera naevia)

Spaces

Merops punctum ensures consistent presentation of punctuation signs, and removes or adds spaces as necessary. For example, spaces are removed from the beginnings or ends of parenthetical expressions.

However, this process is subject to significant checks and balances to ensure that, for example, spaces are added after colons and semicolons, unless they form part of tight technical expressions (e.g. ratios, genetic terms).

Quotation marks

Merops punctum ensures consistency in the use of quotation marks according to publisher style or language convention.

Apostrophes and primes are differentiated according to context (e.g. coordinates; 10º3N).

En rules

Merops punctum has a comprehensive set of fuzzy-matching and database-listed rules for handling en-dashes:

   Associated terms: e.g. north–east trend;

   Name pairings: e.g. Mann–Whitney U-test.
