Merops graphica

graphics

Merops graphica does for graphics what Merops biblio does for references: cross-checking citations and files, renaming files automatically, and enabling image manipulation from within the text-editing environment.

Painted Lorikeets

Standardization

Merops graphica ensures consistent presentation of object citations and legend text, e.g. spelling Figure in full at the start of a sentence, otherwise abbreviating to Fig.

Figure panels

Merops graphica applies a predefined convention to the presentation of image-panels citations, e.g. Fig. 12a; Figs 13(b) and 14(a,b).

Merops graphica also marks up document structure down to the panel level within a legend, opening up radical new online publishing opportunities.

Cross-checking

Merops graphica checks that image citations are in sequence. If not, the files and citations can be automatically renumbered.

Merops graphica automates the task of ensuring graphics are named consistently by scanning names that include numerical identifiers so that they can be standardized by reference to the name of the parent text file. For example, if the text file is called Rep#243-82

Fig 2 a.eps Rep#243-82a.eps

Pavo graphica also retrieves file extensions:  Fig 2 Fig 2.eps

If not all images are present, or if they have not been cited, Merops graphica can raise an author query, or prompt a production user to contact the author to retrieve the files.

Image manipulation

By drawing on an XML content profile, Merops graphica can automatically resize images that fall close to the optimum size for page layout, e.g. ensure that a graph 19 picas wide is resized to fit a 17-pica layout.

An interactive interface allows users to stipulate precise dimensions within the editing interface, and image resolution can be automatically adjusted through interaction with Pavo raster.
