Reference elements

Merops biblio biblio uses powerful and comprehensive matching algorithms to identify the elements of each reference in a list. Here are some examples of what is identified and corrected:

    false paragraph breaks within entries

miskeyed years containing the letter ‘l’

relocation of years placed incorrectly within references

inverted surnames, initials or prefixes (e.g. Geert, A VanVan Geert, A.)

large author lists truncated to, say, six authors plus et al.

expansion of journal titles  (e.g. Br Med J British Medical Journal)

elision or explosion of page ranges (e.g. 123-26 123–126)

incorrectly ordered elements (e.g. OUP, OxfordOxford: OUP)

Stylistic consistency

Merops biblio biblio can apply specific formatting to elements and punctuation between them. Compare these before [1] and after [2] cases:

1   Li, R , Y Shen, LB Yang, LF Lue, C Finch Jnr. & J Rogers. “Estrogen enhances uptake of amyloid ß-protein by microglia derived from the human cortex”. Journal of Neurochemistry 2000:75;1447–54.

2   Li R., Shen Y., Yang L. B., Lue L. F., Finch C. Jr and Rogers J. (2000) Estrogen enhances uptake of amyloid β-protein by microglia derived from the human cortex. J. Neurochem. 75, 1447–1454.

Here amendments, based around a style template, have been made to every part of this reference automatically, potentially saving hours of work on lengthy texts.

Comprehensive

Merops biblio biblio operates on journal, book, thesis, patent and Web references. Some of these can consume much editing time. Savings can be made on research, or on querying authors, to ensure that book references include a town or city with every publisher name, for example.
